Part 1: Those Cookies You Really Should Rather Not Eat
Look, you know the drill. You landed here, and if this were a normal site, a giant, obnoxious banner would have covered 40% of the screen, demanding you make a “choice” about your “privacy.”
It’s all a charade. Let’s be honest about what’s happening.
1. What Are These Digital Gremlins?
Cookies are tiny, pathetic text files that our website shoves into your browser. They’re not “viruses.” They’re just little digital stalkers. Their job is to sit there and take notes.
2. Why We Bother (The Selfish Part)
We use them for two reasons:
The “Is This Thing On?” Cookies (Necessary): These are the ones that do basic, boring stuff, like remembering that you are, in fact, in South Africa, so we don’t show you prices in Icelandic Króna. The site would literally fall apart without them.
The “Vanity” Cookies (Analytics): These tell us how many people visited our site. Did they come from Google? Did they read our “brilliant” blog post for 3 seconds before getting bored? It’s all about stroking our own ego and seeing if our marketing is a total waste of money.
The “Actual Stalker” Cookies (Marketing): This is the one you’re worried about. If we’re running ads, this cookie tells Facebook or Google, “Hey, this person looked at our ‘Services’ page but didn’t buy! STALK THEM. Show them our ad on every website they visit for the next two weeks until they either hire us or throw their laptop out a window.”
3. Your “Choice” (The Illusion of Control)
Every cookie banner gives you “options” that are designed to make you just click “Accept All.”
“Accept All”: This is the “I give up, just let me read the article” button. You’re inviting all the digital gremlins in for a party. We thank you. Our marketing team thanks you.
“Reject All”: This is the “Get off my lawn!” button. We respect your paranoia. The site will probably still work, but we’ll have no idea you were here, you digital ghost, you.
“Manage Preferences”: This is for the 1% of you who actually have the time and energy to go through 50 toggle switches. We’re legally required to offer this, but… really? You got nothing better to do?
Part 2: PAIA - You Can Ask, But...
Alright, still with us? Good. Now for the really boring part.
POPIA (the policy you read earlier) is about us protecting your data. PAIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act) is the opposite. It’s about you having the right to demand our information.
1. What’s This, Then?
PAIA is a law that says you, as a South African citizen, have the right to see the records we hold. It’s supposed to promote “transparency.”
2. So, What Can You Ask For?
In theory, you can ask for all sorts of our records. Our “PAIA Manual” (which we were forced to write) lists all the categories, like:
Operational records.
Financial records.
Employee records (no, you can’t have those, you creep).
3. Here’s The Catch (The Bureaucracy)
You can’t just call us up and “brainstorm” our financial data. You have to formally request it. This is a glorious, 1980s-style bureaucratic process.
It involves:
Getting Our PAIA Manual: You have to email our “Info Ninja” (Juhan, at [Your Email Address]) and ask for the “PAIA Manual.” Just the act of asking will probably put you on some kind of list.
Filling Out a Form: You’ll have to find, download, and correctly fill out the official “Form 2.” Yes, “Form 2.” It’s as fun as it sounds.
Paying a Fee: Oh, you thought this was free? Cute. There’s an “application fee.”
Waiting: We then have 30 days to either give you the info or send you a very formal letter telling you why you can’t have it.
4. The Bottom Line
We have this manual. We will give it to you if you ask. It’s probably in a dusty Dropbox folder somewhere. But if you’re not a lawyer or a journalist on a crusade, you will probably never, ever need this.
It’s the government’s way of making sure we have a filing cabinet, even if no one ever opens it.
